Malcolm Atkins

I’m a lapsed Marxist European composer/performer perturbed by the corporatisation of learning and the privatisation of compassion instrumental in the decline of the small island I inhabit. My main interest is in bringing communities together through sharing the combinations of sounds and movements that define our cultural identities. I have all the expected paperwork for composition – diploma, degree, MA, PhD, etc, (although none of the prerequisite elite network) and a very nice garden.

I initiated putting artwork in that garden before lockdown. I worked on the assumption that as I lived in a suburban area the garden should reflect a hybrid of the urban and rural. Items from the house had gradually been incorporated into shrubbery and lawn and hedge. During lockdown, I realised that the garden could become a working gallery and artists (mainly local friends) have joined me in creating a vibrant space for comment on the contemporary insanity of our compassionless consumer culture. The space is also open to contributions from the local community and includes a community library.

My main occupation is as a sonic artist and this recording for the Eurovision Song Contest 2020 reflects that…

I have created two books with Alex and Julian: Bojo the Clown Takes Over the Circus and Bojo in the Underworld.

An animated version of Bojo the Clown Takes Over the Circus can be watched here…

And a reading of Bojo in the Underworld is on SoundCloud…

I have also engaged in creating a number of works from found and collated objects currently on show in the Garden Gallery. Some of these are shown below…

The Gilded Cage of Unbridled Consumption – a collaboration with Julian Dourado.

Stone Cold Engineering – a collaboration with Melissa Lintern.

I have a website which is woefully out of date and reflects my current disinterest in personal rather than collective web presence: www.malcolmatkins.com
